where to honeymoon in Mexico.
How to get to Holbox?
Holbox is located in front of the Yucatan Peninsula coast and belongs to the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve. The island is located 145 kilometers from Cancun, which is part of this list as well.
The first step is that you will have to move from the point where you are (for example, Cancun or
Playa del Carmen) to a small town called Chiquila. This place is the base place to get to Holbox.
So, the first thing you have to do is get to Chiquila. To get to this unique town, there are few options that are viable:
By bus from Cancun
You will have to go to the Cancun bus station, which is located in the center of the city.
From here, the buses of the ADO brand that arrive at Chiquila depart, but it is important that you consider the following:
There are only two types of buses for Chiquila, the direct ones and the ones that make stops. The direct one only leaves at 9 in the morning from the station and, on average, takes 2 and half hours to Chiquila. The cost is about 244 Mexican pesos.
The second (the one that stops in various intermediate towns) has 3 schedules and takes an average of 3 hours 20 minutes to Chiquila. The cost is about 175 Mexican pesos.
I definitely recommend traveling on the direct bus since you will save a lot of time and fatigue despite being a bit more expensive. You can buy your tickets in advance to secure your seat.
By bus from Playa del Carmen
If you are in Playa del Carmen, your option is the following:
An ADO brand bus leaves every day at 09:25 a.m. from the tourist terminal located on Avenida 5 and Benito Juarez. The cost starts from 260 Mexican pesos. I recommend you buy your ticket in advance to ensure your place.
Once you arrive in Chiquila (either by car or bus), you have two options to get to Holbox:
• Boat: In Holbox, there are many fishermen who also offer the service of taking you to the island in their boats. They will charge you the same as the ferry.
• Ferry: There are two ferry companies.
Both have exactly the same service, and they will charge you 150 pesos for a single trip. Both companies leave and arrive at the same port.
Note: Keep in mind that the price varies and depends on the season.
